The Tiger ( 虎 ), associated with good fortune, power, and royalty, is viewed with both fear and respect. Their protection and wisdom is sought after. The Chinese (and generally all of the East) see the tiger, and not the lion, as the king of beasts. The Year of the Tiger is associated with the earthly branch symbol 寅.

The Year of the Tiger: Tales from the Chinese Zodiac The Year of the Tiger: Tales from the Chinese Zodiac

I am a big fan of Oliver Chin's Tales of the Zodiac series. The Year of the Tiger is the fifth in the series. I love these books-- they are the perfect gifts for new moms and I have bought them all. I feel the books are a more personal gift that celebrates the year of birth of the baby interweaved with an easy introduction to the Chinese Zodiac. This is an entertaining story of Tiger and the little girl Su. The story-telling, along with the rich illustrations truly flow together to give us a cute and fun hint of what someone's personality might be like born in the Year of the Tiger!

Year of the Tiger was a great book to read to my students prior to our school Lunar New Year celebration. The illustrations are very appealing, kid friendly and seem to jump right off the page. The explanation of the Chinese Zodiac animals on the opening page helps to set the playful and informative tone of the story. Oliver Chin effortlessly weaves the animals of the Chinese Zodiac throughout and creates lovable characters and situations that the students can identify with. The book led to a wonderful discussion on how it is easy to make assumptions and form incorrect opinions about people you don't know..,just as both Su and Teddy's family did. The students pointed out that in the end, it was the kids who made the grownups see the error of their ways! My students simply could not get enough, and have since come to my library to re-read The Year of the Tiger, and to "seek and find" each Chinese Zodiac Animal tucked away within the pages. I would highly recommend this book as well as Oliver Chin's Tales from the Chinese Zodiac books.

Although this is a good story, well-written and interesting, it is NOT really a story about Chinese New Year. It should probably be catogorized as a story about environmental protection. I bought this book to read in my 2nd grade son's class on Chinese New Year. It disappointed me in the sense that it has practically nothing to do with Chinese New Year.

"The Year of the Tiger: Tales from the Chinese Zodiac" is the fifth in a series of children's picture books on the twelve animals of the Chinese zodiac, following The Year of the Ox (2009), The Year of the Rat (2008), The Year of the Pig (2007), and The Year of the Dog (2006). Teddy the tiger cub makes friends with a human girl named Su, against his royal parents recommendations. Can tigers and humans coexist peacefully? Young readers find out this and more about the traits of persons who are born in the Year of the Tiger, 2010.

2010 is the Year of the Tiger! Despite his parents' warnings, a princely cub befriends a human, the girl Su. But can Teddy prove the jungle is big enough for both man and beast? The popular series Tales of the Chinese Zodiac features all twelve animals of the new year! This is the fifth book...

My 6mth old son cannot sleep without me reading this to him. The vivid illustrations kept him focused on the reading. Unlike most children books, the illustrations are expressive which capture my son's interest and he loves the ending of the story. He falls asleep with content as soon as I close the book. Thank you and I look forward to the next series

This is a great book to read to your kids. The writing is more focused and the illustrations are better than Lin Fong O'Neill's previous books. This tale embodies the better components of the traditional fairy tales that we grew up on complete with the darkest aspects (including a scary villain). This is a writer growing and I'd like to see her attempt lenghtier and more ambitious works aimed at an older audience (perhaps a teenage audience a la the early Harry Potter books - she certainly has the gift).

It is so hard to find a good gift for my nieces and nephews! That is a new instant classic that hasn't fallen into the successful series slump that befell my previous favorite, Olivia. (I am still upset about the "lying is okay" theme of Olivia Saves the Circus.) I look forward to more tales of smart Betty and this charming cast of characters. The images of the tiger in the forest are beautiful, as are the funny episodes at the neighbors' homes. This is a lovely book all around!

I was looking for a book to welcome my five years old daughter, Lily, to her new home in New Jersey: a book that a worried little person, coming to a new environment, could get a positive and fun message from. "Tiger" did the trick. The book has a really good balance of imagination, humor and color in a neat story line - and it is just the right length for moms and dads to read to kids at bedtime. Lily just cracked up at the visual of what comes Tiger's way at the story's end!! We look forward to Lin and Ray's next offering.

Betty is very tiny for her age and sometimes feels insignificant. But when a bullying tiger threatens her and her family with harm, she realizes that her size does not matter. With courage and some helpful friends, Betty uses her intelligence to outsmart her enemy...

Attributes

Tiger people are difficult to resist, for they are magnetic characters and their natural air of authority confers a certain prestige on them. They are tempestuous yet calm, warm-hearted yet fearsome, courageous in the face of danger yet yielding, soft and mysterious. They enjoy a life full of challenges and unexpected events, like visiting unusual places and meeting interesting or outstanding people. Other people in their area are easily attracted by the tiger's enthusiasm and way of life. Tigers find pleasure in the unpredictable, and while other people would rather make a backward step, they are not afraid to explore the new and unusual. But it is not that simple to interest the Tiger. What they really need is first-hand experience. Usually open and frank, these people are likely to withdraw and can be aggressive when trapped. As soon as the Tiger has regained their sense of security their confidence also returns, enabling them to set out once more. These people usually tend to trust their instincts, though there is another side of their personality, which assesses situations thoughtfully before they launch any actions. Their friends usually secretly admire their determination and optimism, though sometimes may find it complicated to share the Tiger's enthusiasm and can be pushed away and left behind. Although Tigers can be courageous and generous friends, if they are not able to achieve what they want, they can be inflexible and self-centered. So if your friend was born in the year of the Tiger, there will be highs and lows in your friendship, but the friendship itself will remain firm.

Ideal jobs for tigers include entrepreneur, military officer, politician, musician, writer, poet, artist, theater director, biological and environmental engineer, stockbroker, athlete, film star, trade union leader, company director, stunt person, explorer, and lawyer.

Love interests for the Tiger are the Dog and Horse.
